Where it is and why it is worth it
Guatapé is about 80 kilometers east of Medellín, on the shore of a reservoir that flooded the old town of El Peñol in the seventies. It has two attractions that justify the day: El Peñol Rock, a roughly 200-meter monolith with a 740-step staircase wedged into a crack, and the town itself, with its zócalos, the colorful reliefs decorating the base of every house.
Option 1: public bus
They leave from Medellín's Terminal del Norte (Caribe Metro station) all day. The ride takes about two hours and the fare, as of this article, is around 20,000 pesos each way; check the price at the counter because it changes every year. Ask to get off at the Rock if you want to climb it first, then take another bus or a mototaxi to town, about ten minutes away. To return, the last buses leave mid-afternoon and fill up on weekends.
Option 2: car or private driver
It gives freedom with schedules and makes sense for four or five people. The road is good but has curves and weekend traffic, especially on the afternoon return. Count on two and a half hours out on a normal day and paid parking both at the Rock and in town.
Option 3: full-day tour
This is the option for anyone who wants to see everything in one day without thinking about logistics: transport from El Poblado, breakfast and lunch, a boat ride on the reservoir, a bilingual guide and time in town. Our tour leaves at 7:00 a.m. from Parque de El Poblado and returns around 5:00 p.m. Watch out for one detail that confuses people on every Guatapé tour: the Rock's entrance ticket is paid separately, at the gate.
The Rock: what nobody tells you
It is 740 steps and the climb takes 15 to 25 minutes depending on your pace. There are rest stops and a shop at the top. Go up early: at midday the sun is strong and the lines grow. In the rain the steps get slippery, so wear shoes with grip. The view from the top, with the reservoir full of islands, is the photo of Antioquia.
