Pablo Escobar in Medellín: why we tell this story without glorifying it

Medellín does not want to erase Escobar from its history. It wants the whole story told, all 46,612 victims included.

Why we run this tour

There is a question we get asked a lot: if Medellín wants to leave Pablo Escobar behind, why offer a tour about him? The answer is that the city does not want to forget him; it wants the story told properly. For years the only version going around was the one from the TV series: the charismatic boss, the parties, the money. What was missing were the dead, the bombs and the neighborhoods left scarred. Our guides grew up in that Medellín; some lost relatives. They do not tell a legend, they tell what they saw.

What you will see

The tour lasts four hours and leaves from San José church in Parque de El Poblado, transport included. The first stop is the museum run by Escobar's family, with objects, photos and their version of events. We go precisely to contrast it: the guide explains what is true, what is embellished and what is left unsaid.

Then Jardines Montesacro cemetery, where Escobar, his cousin Gonzalo Gaviria and Griselda Blanco, the Black Widow, are buried. Then the rooftop in the Los Olivos neighborhood where he died on December 2, 1993, and the three versions of his last hours that are still debated. And to close, Inflexión Park, built where the Mónaco building stood, with the names of the 46,612 victims of the Medellín cartel. We end there on purpose.

What you will not find

There are no costumes, no photos with a fake mustache, no T-shirt slogans. We do not sell souvenirs with his face. We do not pass by any living relative's house without permission or enter neighborhoods where people do not want visitors. And if someone in the group arrives expecting a tribute, the guide will say it respectfully in the first minutes: this tour exists so that what happened never happens again.

How to choose an Escobar tour that is worth it

There are dozens of tours on the subject in Medellín and they are not all the same. Before booking any of them, ours included, look at three things.

  • Who guides: someone who lived through that era in the city tells things that are in no book.
  • Whether it goes to Inflexión Park or another place dedicated to the victims. If not, it is a fan tour.
  • How the description talks: if it sells "the life of the king of cocaine", you already know which version you will hear.
