Three days in Medellín: an itinerary for first-time visitors

Three days are enough to understand why this city wins people over. This is the order we would give a friend.

Before you start

Medellín sits at 1,500 meters and has spring weather all year: 18 to 28 degrees, strong sun at midday and seasonal rain. Stay in El Poblado, Laureles or Envigado, get around by Metro and ride apps, and carry cash in pesos for street food. This itinerary mixes our three tours with what you can do on your own, in the least tiring order.

Day 1: Comuna 13 and downtown

Start with the Comuna 13 Graffiti Tour at 9:30 a.m., when there are fewer people on the escalators and the sun is still kind. Three hours with street breakfast included. When it ends, take the Metro from San Javier to Parque Berrío station and walk downtown: Plaza Botero with its 23 sculptures, the Palacio de la Cultura and the Museo de Antioquia. Have lunch downtown; it is where you eat best for less.

In the afternoon, go up to Pueblito Paisa on Nutibara hill to see the whole valley, and end the day in Laureles: carrera 70 has bars with live music and fewer tourists than El Poblado.

Day 2: Guatapé and El Peñol Rock

A full day out of the city. Our tour leaves at 7:00 a.m. from Parque de El Poblado and includes breakfast, the giant Christ's head at Montecielo, El Peñol Rock with its 740 steps, a boat ride on the reservoir, lunch and free time among the town's zócalos. You are back around 5:00 p.m. It is the day that leaves the most photos and tires you the most: have dinner near the hotel and go to bed early.

Day 3: the history and the cable car

In the morning, the Pablo Escobar History tour at 9:00 a.m. from San José church: four hours to understand the eighties and nineties without glorifying them, ending at the victims' memorial. It is harder than the other two days, which is why we leave it for last, once you already know today's city.

In the afternoon, take the Metro to Acevedo and ride the Metrocable up to Santo Domingo, and if the weather cooperates, continue on the tourist cable car to Parque Arví, a forest at 2,500 meters with trails and a farmers' market. Come down at sunset: the lit-up city from the cable car is the perfect farewell.

If you have a fourth day

The Botanical Garden and Parque Explora in the morning, both next to Universidad station, and a long lunch in Envigado or Sabaneta in the afternoon. Or simply repeat what you liked most: people who go back to Comuna 13 without a guide find they already know half the neighborhood.
